Attention-Based Applications in Extended Reality to Support Autistic Users: A Systematic Review

With the rising prevalence of autism diagnoses, it is essential for research to understand how leverage technology support diverse nature autistic traits. While traditional interventions focused on medical cure and rehabilitation, recent aims can accommodate each unique situation in an efficient engaging way. Extended reality (XR) has been shown be effective improving attention users given that more motivating than other mediums. Here, we conducted a systematic review 59 articles explored role XR users. We systematically analyzed demographics, study design findings, including screening measurement methods. Furthermore, methodological inconsistencies literature, synthesize methods protocols tools, physiological behavioral cues tasks. there substantial evidence effectiveness using attention-based traits, have identified three principal gaps provide promising directions examine populations interact with XR. First, our findings highlight disproportionate geographic locations studies underrepresentation adults, gender disparity, presence individuals diagnosed co-occurring conditions across studies. Second, many used assortment standardized novel tasks self-report assessments limited tested reliability. Lastly, lacks performance maintenance transferability.
